From a Hilton Head native to Harbourmaster, Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina welcomes Mason Lemon

Updated: Apr 1

Harbourmaster Mason Lemon

Mason Lemon grew up on the waters of Hilton Head Island and now as a 28-year-old, he’s back as Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina’s new harbourmaster! Mason has always loved being out on the water. Growing up in this environment fostered his passion for fishing and working on boats at a young age.

Mason picked up many great leadership qualities along the way. He worked on the water here at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina previously for five summers, then went off to Clemson to study travel and tourism management. Post college he spent three-and-a-half years working in marinas from Virgina to Texas, including Virginia’s Tidewater Yacht Marina, whose 300 slips kept him busy.

Although Mason had a feeling he would be back to Hilton Head one day.

Mason told CH2 Magazine, “There’s no place like home. I always felt like I’d come back to the island, I just didn’t know when.” He is now managing all 178 slips at Shelter Cove, and still stays busy overseeing dockhands, commercial charters and the Marina Ship’s Store retail shop.

Mason shared, “It’s like playing Tetris sometimes. We have a few different yachts coming in today that are 70-foot-plus, so that involves moving stuff around—this person is here for six months, this one for three days, where do we put them? It’s a great job, I love it.”
