Experiencing the Hilton Head fishing season in August waters means trophy fish are coming close to shore. These trophy fish include tarpon, the blacktip shark and jack crevalle. Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters call this trio of fish biting right now, “The Big Dogs.”

Captain Miles told Island Events, “Two of these fish, the tarpon and the blacktip shark, often weigh over 100 pounds and put on awesome aerial displays.

People usually catch the blacktip shark while tarpon fishing or vice versa, making it easy to get two of the three “Big Dogs” in one spot.”

Be mindful though, as one of the smallest of the three, may just put up the toughest fight for the catch. Captain Miles said, “The third is the jack crevalle, weighing up to 40 pounds. But hold on! These fish fight like 100-pounders.

The tenacious jack crevalle often takes much longer to bring to the rod tip than the other two, even though they are twice as big.”
